What Is a Dune Buggy? Dune Buggy vs Go-Kart, Sizes and Prices (2026)

A dune buggy is an open, roll-caged off-road vehicle built for sand and dirt. Today the word usually means a tube-frame, automatic go-kart with bucket seats. Kids’ versions start at $899 electric or $1,129 gas, and adult gas two-seaters start at $2,299, as of October 14, 2026.
If you searched for a dune buggy, you probably want something you can drive off-road, with a seat belt and a roll cage, not a pedal kart or a racing kart. That machine exists. It just goes by another name in most catalogs. Below is what the term means, how it differs from a go-kart, and what is on our shelf today.
What is a dune buggy?
The original dune buggy was a hot-rod hack. The famous Meyers Manx started life in a Newport Beach garage in the early sixties as a shortened Volkswagen Beetle chassis under a fiberglass shell. A sand rail goes further and drops the body altogether for an exposed tube frame.
The machine you can buy for a yard, a farm or a trail today is a smaller cousin. Take a steel tube frame with a roll cage, add bucket seats and off-road tires, fit an automatic CVT with reverse, and you have what shoppers mean by the word. Engines in the table below run from a 36V electric motor to a 275.6cc EFI engine.
Dune buggy vs go-kart: what is the difference?
The name. No regulation or industry standard says where a go-kart stops and a dune buggy starts, and sellers use both words for the same machine. We do too: every kart below is listed as a go-kart, and the off-road go-karts and dune buggies collection holds all of them.
What buyers mean by “buggy” is a short checklist, and you can read it straight off a listing:
- •Roll cage and tube frame. The frame is the vehicle, not a body shell on top of it.
- •Off-road tires and a raised stance. A flat-track kart sits low on slick tires and wants pavement. A buggy does not.
- •Automatic drive. Nearly every buggy-style kart here is a CVT automatic with a reverse gear. There is no clutch lever and no gears to learn.
- •Two or four seats. Most kids’ karts are two-seaters. The family-size karts carry four.

Which dune buggy size: kids, youth or adult?
Buy for leg reach, not for the age on the box. A child who has to slide down the seat to reach the brake cannot stop the kart. Engine size matters less than that. In the table, the kids’ gas karts run from 110cc to 212cc, the youth class from 124cc to 212cc, and the adult class from 168.9cc up.
Age ranges are a convention, not a rule. We do not treat any one number as law, and neither should you. The maker lists an age range on each page, and our kids’ go-kart fit guide shows how to measure a child at the kitchen table. Do not buy a bigger kart for a child to grow into. They cannot control it, and you pay more for the privilege.
Two seats or four?
Two seats is the right default. The two-seat adult karts in the table run from $2,399 to $3,099. A four-seater is a different purchase: a longer, heavier vehicle that costs more, and the two in the table, the Blazer 4-200EX and the Eagle 300XRS-4E, are both fuel-injected. Measure your narrowest gate and the trailer you would haul it on before you order a four-seater.
If the kart will carry heavy loads or climb hills, step up to the water-cooled 275.6cc engine. For a few flat acres, the smaller engines do the job. Our go-kart price guide breaks down what each engine class costs.
What to check before you buy a dune buggy
- •Brakes. The listing title says whether the hydraulic discs are rear only or front and rear. Read it.
- •Start. Several TrailMaster karts have electric start with a pull-start backup, which saves the day on a dead battery.
- •Assembly. Several TrailMaster models, including the Blazer 200R, have a second listing marked 95 Percent Pre-Assembled. We also offer an assembly service. Ask when you call.
- •Where you can drive it. These are off-road machines. Road rules differ by state, so read our guide on whether UTVs and go-karts are street legal before you plan any road use.

Frequently asked questions
How much is a dune buggy?
In the table above, dune-buggy-style karts run from $899 for a kids’ electric model to $4,699 for a four-seat 275.6cc model, as of October 14, 2026. The adult two-seaters in the table run from $2,399 to $3,099. Current prices are on the off-road go-karts and dune buggies collection.
Dune buggy for a 10 year old: which one fits?
Start with the youth class, such as the TrailMaster Eagle Mid XRX at $1,699 or the RPS Spyder Mini 125 at $1,499, and the kids’ class below it. Fit comes from leg reach to the pedals, not from age, so measure your child first. Our kids’ go-kart fit guide shows how.
Dune buggy for a 12 year old: kids’ or adult size?
Many 12 year olds fit the youth class, where the Mid XRX at $1,699 is a typical choice. A tall, confident rider can move up to an adult two-seater, but check that they can reach the pedals with a slight bend in the knee. The maker’s listed age range on each product page is a guide, not a rule.
Is a dune buggy the same as a go-kart?
In today’s small-vehicle market, mostly yes. No rule separates the two words, and sellers use both for the same off-road, roll-caged, automatic machine. Pedal karts and flat-track racing karts are a different thing.
What is a mini dune buggy?
It is a kids’-class buggy-style kart. The Tao Motor GK110 at $1,249 (110cc) and the TrailMaster Eagle Mini XRX Plus at $1,249 (212cc) are examples. The TrailMaster Cheetah i3, a one-seat electric, is $899.
Is there a dune buggy for adults?
Yes. Adult karts in the table run from 168.9cc to 275.6cc, and the adult two-seaters start at $2,399. Our adult go-kart guide covers engines and seats in detail.
