Pit Bikes for Adults: What Fits, Real Sizes and Prices (2026)

A pit bike is a small-wheeled, low-seat dirt bike, usually 110cc to 150cc. Adults can ride one, but most adult-size models have 17- or 19-inch front wheels and 32- to 35-inch seats. The adult pit-style bikes in our table below cost $899 to $1,629 today.
If you searched pit bike for adults, you probably want one of two things. Either you are tall and want something small and fun, or you are shopping for a bike that fits you without the weight and seat height of a full-size 250cc. Both are reasonable. The catch is that the words “pit bike” mean different things to different sellers, and a listing that says pit bike can be 14 inches or 19 inches at the front wheel. This guide sorts that out and gives you real specs from the bikes we list.
What actually counts as a pit bike?
The traditional answer is a four-stroke bike with 12- to 14-inch wheels, a seat around 28 to 30 inches, and an engine from 50cc up to about 160cc. Racers used them to move around the paddock, which is where the name comes from. They are lighter and cheaper than a full-size dirt bike, and easier to drop and pick up.
The shop-floor answer is looser. Many factories sell 125cc to 150cc bikes with 17- or 19-inch front wheels and call them pit bikes, youth dirt bikes or adult dirt bikes depending on who is writing the listing. We keep them in one collection, Dirt Bikes & Pit Bikes, because shoppers search for them that way. So ignore the label and read three specs instead: front wheel size, seat height and engine size.
Can an adult ride a pit bike?
Yes, with limits. The honest rule of thumb is that you want to reach the ground with the balls of both feet while sitting on the bike. That is a convention, not a law, and suspension sag helps you a little. A 28-inch seat on a 14-inch-wheel bike suits a shorter or lighter adult. A taller adult will feel cramped and top-heavy on it, and will be happier on a 33- to 35-inch bike with a 17- or 19-inch front wheel.
Engine size matters less than people think. A 125cc bike and a 140cc bike are close in power. What changes your day is the seat, the wheel size and whether the bike has a clutch. If you are new to manual shifting, read our automatic vs semi-automatic dirt bike guide first.

Two things stand out. The cheapest bikes are kick-start only: the Apollo Thunder T20 at $899 and the Thunder 140 at $999 both skip the electric starter. The TrailMaster bikes at $1,199 add one. And the 14-inch TrailMaster JHL MK125 is the only bike in the table with a true pit-bike wheel size and a seat under 30 inches. It costs more than the 17-inch kick-start bikes, and what you get for the money is electric start, inverted forks and dual disc brakes, not a bigger engine.
125cc, 140cc or 150cc?
For a pit bike, the gap between these three is smaller than the gap between kick start and electric start. A 125cc bike is plenty for a trail loop or a backyard track. A 140cc or 149cc bike pulls a little harder with a heavier rider, and the 149cc RPS Viper-E in the table has a five-speed gearbox where most of the others list four speeds. If you weigh more than the average rider, step up in engine size and read the rider limit on the listing. If you want a bigger bike than this, our 150cc dirt bike guide covers the next step.

Pit bike vs dirt bike: which one do you want?
- •Pick a pit bike if you are under about average height, want a bike you can pick up after a drop, or plan to ride a small track, a field or a yard. The 14-inch MK125 is the closest thing to the classic shape.
- •Pick a 17- or 19-inch bike if you are taller, want more suspension travel, or plan to ride trails. These suit most adults better.
- •Skip both and look at a full-size 250cc if you are a heavier rider who wants to ride for hours. Our 250cc beginner guide says who that bike fits and who it does not.

Street legal? Read this before you buy
Treat every pit bike as an off-road machine. Some listings say “off-road only” in the title, like the RPS Viper-E. Others do not, and that does not make them plated. Whether a bike can ever be registered for the street depends on your state, and the answer is often no. Call your state motor vehicle agency before you buy, not after. Our street-legal dirt bike guide explains what usually decides it.
What to expect when it arrives
We are based in Garland, Texas. Bikes arrive crated, so plan an afternoon for setup. Many bikes arrive with little or no engine oil, and fasteners and spokes need a check before the first ride. We wrote a full walkthrough, what to do when a dirt bike arrives in a crate, and it is worth reading before the truck shows up. If you would rather not wrench, assembly is available on select bikes in our assembly collection. Questions about fit? Call 1-877-667-6289 and ask before you order.
Frequently asked questions
What is a pit bike?
A pit bike is a compact, low-seat dirt bike with small wheels, traditionally 12 to 14 inches, and an engine around 50cc to 160cc. The name comes from riders using them to get around the pits at races. Today the label is also used for 17- and 19-inch bikes that are still smaller than a full-size motocross bike.
What is the best pit bike for adults?
For a shorter or lighter adult who wants the classic pit-bike feel, the 14-inch-wheel TrailMaster JHL MK125 has the lowest seat in our table at 29.5 inches. For taller riders, the 17- and 19-inch bikes with 33 to 34.5-inch seats fit better, and the Apollo Thunder T20 is the lowest-priced of them at $899.
How much does a pit bike cost?
Adult-size pit-style bikes in our table run from $899 to $1,629 as of October 28, 2026. Kick-start bikes sit at the low end. Electric start and inverted forks push the price up. Prices change, so check the listing.
What is the difference between a pit bike and a dirt bike?
Size, mostly. A pit bike has smaller wheels, a lower seat and a smaller engine. A dirt bike has bigger wheels, longer suspension travel and usually a larger engine. The line is blurry: many 125cc to 150cc bikes with 17- or 19-inch wheels are sold under either name.
Is a pit bike street legal?
Not as sold. Pit bikes are built for off-road use. Whether one can be registered for the street afterward depends on your state, so call your state motor vehicle agency before you buy. Our guide to street-legal dirt bikes explains what usually decides it.
How big is a pit bike?
A classic pit bike has 12- to 14-inch wheels and a seat near 28 to 30 inches. Bigger bikes sold as pit bikes have 17- or 19-inch front wheels and seats from about 32 to 35 inches. Read the seat height on the listing and compare it with your inseam.
