Used ATV or New? What a Budget Four-Wheeler Really Costs
- on October 26, 2026
- Categories: Articles
Buy new if you want a four-wheeler with no unknown history and a budget near $1,000 or more. Our lowest-priced new ATV is $659. Buy used only if you can test-ride it cold, check the frame and drivetrain yourself, and the machine is a proven name brand. Under about $500, you are shopping the used market.
Most “used four wheelers for sale” searches end at a classified listing, and a listing tells you nothing about the machine. This guide covers what a used ATV really costs once you own it, what a new budget ATV costs today, and how to inspect a used one if that is the road you take. We sell new machines, so weigh our view accordingly.
What a used ATV really costs after you buy it
The asking price is the cheap part. The costs that arrive afterward are the ones sellers do not mention, and almost all of them trace to how the machine was stored and maintained.
- •Fuel system. A quad that sat for a season with ethanol gas in the tank is the classic bargain-turned-project. The carburetor jets gum up, and a rebuild or replacement is the fix.
- •Battery and starter. A weak battery hides other problems. If the seller has it on a charger when you arrive, ask why.
- •Drive belt or chain. Adult ATVs use a CVT belt that wears out. Youth models use a chain that stretches. Neither shows its age from the outside.
- •Tires, bearings and bushings. Wheel bearings and suspension bushings wear quietly and add up fast across four corners.
- •Paperwork. You want a title or bill of sale that matches the frame number. Rules vary by state, so confirm with your state’s motor vehicle agency before you hand over cash.
What does a new budget ATV cost right now?
Here is what we list today across the ATV collection, grouped by engine size. These are current prices, not the old list prices crossed out on the cards. Nearly every machine is an automatic, so there is no clutch to learn. The larger adult class includes a couple of manual 4-speeds.
| Class | Engine | Transmission | Current price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Youth ATV | 107cc | Automatic | $659–$999 |
| Youth ATV, mid size | 120–125cc | Automatic, most with reverse | $869–$1,279 |
| Adult ATV | 149–177cc | Automatic CVT with reverse | $1,499–$2,499 |
| Adult ATV, larger | 197–224cc | Automatic CVT or manual 4-speed, with reverse | $1,999–$2,979 |
Prices pulled from the live Motobuys ATV collection on October 26, 2026. Prices change, so check the listing before you decide.
Safety hardware is where new has a clear edge for kids. Our TrailMaster T110 lists a throttle limiter in its title, and the Tao T-Force T125 lists a remote engine kill. On a used youth quad, a limiter can be backed out or removed, so ask to see it working.
New or used: which one fits you?
| If this is you | Lean toward | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Buying for a young child | New | A working throttle limiter and kill switch are safety features. You cannot verify what a previous owner changed. |
| First ATV, no mechanical experience | New | You will not spot a worn belt or a bent frame, and you have no one to ask. |
| Property or farm use, budget near $1,500 | New | A new 149–177cc automatic starts at the price shown in the table above and has no previous owner’s repairs waiting for you. |
| You wrench and want a big-bore trail machine | Used | You can read the machine, and a used name-brand big-bore quad can be worth the effort. |
| You can test-ride it cold with a friend who knows ATVs | Used | A cold start and a ride tell you most of what you need. |
How to check a used four-wheeler before you pay
If used is your path, do this before any money moves. Bring a flashlight, a friend and a willingness to walk away.
- •Ask for a cold start. Tell the seller not to warm it up. A hard-starting engine, heavy smoke or a rough idle that clears after a minute all point to fuel or compression trouble.
- •Look at the frame welds. Check around the A-arm mounts and the rear swingarm. Cracks, fresh paint over a weld, or a bent rack mean it has been abused or crashed.
- •Grab each wheel and rock it. Play at the top and bottom means a bad wheel bearing. Play side to side at the tie rod means worn steering parts.
- •Check the drive. Listen for squeal or slip on a CVT. On a chain drive, look for hooked sprocket teeth and a chain that sags.
- •Test every control. Brakes, reverse, throttle snap-back, kill switch, headlight and electric start should all work.
- •Smell and look at the fuel. Varnish smell or amber residue in the carburetor bowl means it sat.
- •Match the numbers. The frame number should match the title or bill of sale. If it does not, stop.
What a new ATV from us looks like on arrival
Our ATVs come partly assembled, so you do final assembly yourself or hand it to a shop. If you would rather skip that, ask about our assembly service when you call 877-667-6289. Whatever you buy, spend the first hour on a fastener check and fresh fluids before the first ride. Our guide to what to do when a bike arrives in a crate walks through the receiving checks, and the same steps apply to a quad. Frequently asked questions
Cheap 4 wheelers under $500 dollars?
We do not list a new ATV that low. Our lowest-priced new ATV is $659. Under $500 you are looking at used machines, which need the inspection above.
Buy used ATVs or new?
Buy used if you can inspect and ride it cold and know what you are looking at. Buy new for a child, a first-time rider, or when you want no unknown history.
How much does an ATV cost?
New youth ATVs we list run $659–$999 for a 107cc and $869–$1,279 for 120–125cc. Adult ATVs run $1,499–$2,499 for 149–177cc and $1,999–$2,979 for the larger 197–224cc class.
Used youth ATV for sale: what should I check?
Check that the throttle limiter is present and set, the kill switch or tether works, the brakes grip evenly, and the frame number matches the paperwork. A removed limiter on a child’s quad is a reason to walk.
Cheap atvs for adults?
The least expensive adult ATV we list is $1,499, a 177cc automatic with reverse. Browse the ATV collection for current prices.
Used 50cc four wheeler?
The smallest ATV in our collection is a 107cc youth model. A used 50cc quad is a different, much smaller machine, so inspect it as carefully as any other used ATV.
